RANDOLPH, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Rep. Larry Townsend of Randolph has died after a battle with cancer.

The Day Funeral Home in Randolph confirmed the death on Monday. Townsend, 66, died on Saturday at home.

The three-term Democrat had served on the House Government Operations Committee, and was active in the effort to redraw legislative districts following the 2010 census.

House Speaker Shap Smith praised Townsend as a valued member of the Legislature, who brought a strong sense of fairness and a keen sense of humor.

Calling hours are Friday from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home. The funeral is planned for 9 a.m. Saturday at the Randolph Union High School.
