Flash floods swamp Chittenden County roads

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Sudden storms on the Fourth of July swamped roads; multiple washouts were reported across Chittenden County.

Burlington was just one of the trouble spots. Water rose quickly on Shelburne Road and flooded several intersections as drains were overwhelmed by water. Pine Street looked more like a lake near Lakeside Avenue. And drivers took their chances, continuing through the floodwater not knowing what was beneath.

"We seen the water but we didn't realize it was that deep. Came in, my car stalled right in there, the water came right up into the car and those guys came over here and had to push it in here, praise the lord. Opened the door and it just started flooding right it my car," said Larry Mason, whose car was flooded.

Mason was lucky. Experts like our Sharon Meyer say if water is covering a road, do not drive over it.
