A serious train accident north of the border in Quebec

Posted: Updated:

Around one thousand people were evacuated in the town of Lac Megantic after a freight train carrying oil jumped the tracks.

Lac Megantic is about 1-hundred 55 miles east of Montreal. The train was heading to Maine.

Officials say it was carrying crude oil when it derailed Saturday morning, sparking explosions. The fire spread to a number of nearby homes. Flames and billowing smoke could be seen for several miles hours after the derailment.

Several people have been reported missing. Police in Quebec say it's too early to say if there are any casualties.

Officials say a large amount of fuel also spilled into the Chaudiere River.

The train belongs to Montreal Maine & Atlantic.
