Giving old suits a new purpose

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A men's clothing shop is trying to give old suits a new purpose.

Men's Wearhouse is holding a suit drive this month in which people can donate their gently used professional clothing: everything from suits, to shirts, jackets and ties and those donated clothes will then be given to unemployed people who are trying to get back into the workforce.

"Beyond just the initial request -- the interview -- the foot in the door -- they may need to wear something for a couple days to help them get by and to get that first paycheck," says Darryl Sargent, who works for Men's Wearhouse. "It's a confidence thing -- so that's why we're tryin to get those suits in for people to make them feel real proud -- and ready to work in the world."

The company says it hopes to collect 150,000 pieces of professional clothing by the end of the month.

Men's Wearhouse has partnered with more than 150 nonprofit organizations around the country to distribute the clothing donations collected through the National Suit Drive to unemployed men and women in need.

Donors may also make a monetary contribution to the cause by donating directly to a participating nonprofit organization. Monetary donations are accepted online at nationalsuitdrive.com or at any Men's Wearhouse location. All donors will receive a tax receipt.

As a thank-you, clothing donors will receive a coupon for 50 percent off the regular price of most retail items for their next Men's Wearhouse purchase.

You can also visit the Mens Wearhouse Facebook page to share images and videos and to track donations with a live donations counter. Follow the conversation on Twitter @MensWearhouse for real-time updates with #giveasuit. For every National Suit Drive mention on Facebook and Twitter, Men's Wearhouse will contribute $1 (up to $20,000) to the cause.
