Coast Guard warns of rising lake level

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The Coast Guard is warning boaters as Lake Champlain reaches a record level for July.

This month the water on the lake reached 99.65 feet. Officials at the Coast Guard station in Burlington say at that level, the breakwaters and a number of docks can become submerged. Summer storms are also brining additional debris, like large logs into the lake that are usually more common in the spring.

"The risk is that they could run aground -- start taking on water. If they have no form of communication we don't know where they are, we can't come out there and help them," said U.S. Coast Guard Boatswain 2nd Class Nicholas McGowen.

The Coast Guard is also urging boaters to pay attention to wind and storm advisories.
