Vermont Wrestler Succeeds North of the Border

ST. ALBANS, Vt. -

Enosburg's Jake Renning was working hard in St. Albans Monday afternoon making, trying to make weight for the next week's Pan Am Games in Chile.  It's the first of two international stops for Renning this Summer.  He'll be competing at the Junior World Championships in Bulgaria.

"I'm not going to worry about it (busy schedule). I'm going to take it one day at a time. So, we'll just roll with it," Renning said.

Renning won a Canadian Jr. National Title in the 55 Kg weight class in March.

"Everything started to click and fall and fall and fall, then the hand got raised at the end and I got a little excited,"  Renning said.  "More excited than I usually do ever."

The 19 year old had dual citizenship between the U.S. and Canada.  He decided to leave Enosburg High School in the middle of his senior year in order to train in Montreal, Quebec while attending Concordia College.

"One of the goals he set for himself was to be a Vermont State Champion,"  Jake's father Todd Renning said.  "That was a tough one for me, but as a coach and in talking to the Concordia Coaches, it got easier as we got to thinking more and more about it."

In Canada, Renning could compete in freestyle wrestling.  It's a more upper body oriented style that's scored differently than folk style wrestling, which is used in schools throughout the U.S.

Jake has to pay his own way for both Chile and Bulgaria.  He has set up a facebook page for anyone who wants to sponsor or by a "Team Renning" t-shirt:   https://www.facebook.com/pages/Team-Renning/152342321609432?fref=ts
