Books Over Breakfast: 'Hard Magic' and 'Lightbearer'

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

John Caruso, author of "Hard Magic" and "Lightbearer," just took first and second place in the Wild Card category for the 2013 New York Book Festival.

He appeared on the Channel 3 Morning News to talk about what sets those books apart.

"Hard Magic," which also received an Honorable Mention at the San Francisco Book Festival earlier this spring, is set in the fictional hardscrabble Vermont town of Twin Gaps, and was inspired by losses in Caruso's own life and the impact of the recent global financial crisis on Vermonters. Fourteen-year old protagonist Jude Corgan, whose family runs inhabits a self-styled junkyard, has lost his brother in a car accident. Chasing a series of mysterious wrecks appearing in the family yard, Jude and his cadre of teen sleuths uncover a depth of connections and history permeating their community.

"Hard Magic" is available in print and Kindle versions on Createspace.com, from Amazon and through Vermont bookshops.

"Lightbearer," published by Bold Strokes Books, is available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and through Vermont bookshops.
