SHAFTSBURY, Vt. (AP) - After years of efforts to improve safety at a main north-south route in Shaftsbury, Vt., the state Agency of Transportation has agreed to lower the speed limit from 35 mph to 25 mph.
The new speed limit will be in effect on Route 7A between Cleveland Avenue and Route 67.
The Bennington Banner reports for years, concerned parents and school and town officials have been trying to get a three-color traffic light at a central intersection to allow pedestrians, particularly school children, to cross safely. The effort was focused where Route 7A divides Church Street and Buck Hill Road.
The light was denied several times. Local safety advocates then came up with the reduced speed limit.
