Farm bill vote sets up food stamp fight

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A new farm bill could be the center of a bigger fight over food stamps in the United States.

In Washington, the House has narrowly passed a farm bill, one that every Democrat and 12 Republicans voted against. The White House has threatened to veto that bill. Once again, the issue is food stamps. This bill separated funding for the program to be taken up later.

Rep. Peter Welch says the mood in the House is divisive, but they need to pass a bill that addresses both assistance and agriculture.

"It was terrible and very fractious, and the reason it was is that traditionally there has been unity of interest and creative strength between the farm communities and the nutrition communities and urban legislators and rural legislators," said Welch, D-Vermont. "But what happened in the House was terrible. We essentially passed a political and not a practical bill."

Welch says he hopes they'll be able to reach a compromise when the House and Senate versions of the farm bill go into committee, one that might also include provisions for dairy farmers.
