The Vermont Department of Labor now knows how many IBM employees were laid off last month, but the number is not being released to the public.
Job cuts are believed to have hit a few hundred people at the Essex Junction plant, but IBM does not discuss employment matters. The company was required to provide details to the state, but told the labor department that releasing layoff numbers would cause competitive harm to the company.
The state says it disagrees, but so far is not releasing the numbers. The state is giving IBM until noon Thursday to find a legal argument to keep the number secret.
