Rutland City is gearing up to take another crack at breaking a national blood drive record.
Sponsored by Green Mountain Power and WJJR, a daylong blood drive at the Paramount Theatre aims to collect 400 pints of blood.
Organizers say they hope this Red Cross drive will start the momentum toward a national record-breaking drive coming up in December. Rutland fell short by just 14 pints last year during a record attempt of nearly 2,000 pints.
"The idea really is twofold; one, to get a lot of blood in when they need it during the summer. And this, we really want to use it as a kickoff and buildup of the fall, when we will do the 'Gift of Life' for the national record attempt," said Steve Costello of Green Mountain Power, an organizer of the blood drive.
As of mid-afternoon, more than 200 pints had already been collected. The drive will go into the evening.
