WESTFIELD, Vt. -

Prosecutors say a simmering feud led to a murder in the Northeast Kingdom and they now say that killing was premeditated.

Peter Lavalette, 49, of Derby, is currently charged with second-degree murder for shooting George Kouzoujian, 61, in Westfield last month.

But Orleans County state's attorney Alan Franklin plans to up the charge to first-degree murder. Franklin says Lavalette's statements to police indicate he was angry at Kouzoujian after years of insults, left to get a gun and came back to Kouzoujian's home and shot him five times in the head.

Lavalette will be arraigned on the first-degree murder charge later this month.
