BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The Aberdeen Ironbirds scored twice in both the fourth and sixth innings in a 5-1 New York-Penn League victory over Vermont on Wednesday night in the first of a six-game homestand for the Lake Monsters at historic Centennial Field.

Both starting pitchers, Vermont's Kyle Finnegan and Aberdeen's Jorge Rivera, went the first three innings without allowing a baserunner until the Ironbirds tagged Finnegan for three straight two-out hits in the top of the fourth to score a pair of runs. Trey Mancini got the rally started with a single to right before Conor Bierfeldt and Mike Yastzremski smacked back-to-back RBI doubles for the 2-0 lead.

Vermont got its run in the bottom of the fourth on a walk, hit batter and one-out RBI single from Ryan Huck scoring Boog Powell. Huck's single was the only hit for the Lake Monsters until the seventh inning. The Ironbirds increased their lead in the sixth off Vermont reliever Lee Sosa with an RBI single from Yastzremski, the grandson of Boston Red Sox legend Carl Yastzremski, and a sacrifice fly from Hector Veloz for a 4-1 advantage.

Rivera allowed the one run on one hit with one walk and four strikeouts over the first four innings, while reliever Jimm Yacabonis (1-0) earned the win with two hitless innings of relief with four strikeouts. Austin Urban allowed a Vermont hit in each of the last three innings, but did not give up a run for his first save of the year for Aberdeen (16-12).

Finnegan (0-1) was charged with two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss, while Sosa three runs (two earned) on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Powell was 0-for-3 with a walk to snap his nine-game hitting streak.
