Concerns over snowmobile trail damage

Posted: Updated:
BERLIN, Vt. -

This series of strong summer storms has snowmobilers concerned.

We've seen the washouts on the roads as water rolls over ground that's too saturated to absorb any more.

VAST says it's concerned that the same has happened to parts of their snowmobile trail system. The organization says they're assessing the trails and so far, they've received localized reports of damage.

And the weather has also made it hard to work on trail maintenance in the off-season.

"This is our construction season, which has been delayed because of the rain. Over the next month they'll be assessing bridges, and what kind of trail damage is out there. But I'm pretty certain we do have damage out there," said Alexis Nelson, the executive director of VAST.

Nelson says with 4,700 miles of trails, the extent of the damage won't be known until the fall.
