Retired Vt. officer helps nab bank robbery suspect

Posted: Updated:

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - A retired Vermont police officer says his instincts kicked in when he helped subdue a suspect during an attempted bank robbery in Brattleboro.

John "Zippo" Frechette retired from the Brattleboro police department in December 2011 after 25 years. He says he's missed certain aspects of his job, but he hasn't looked back at his decision to retire.

But the Brattleboro Reformer reports that was before he was in the KeyBank on Main Street on Friday when a bank teller yelled. Frechette helped subdue the suspect until police arrived.

Brattleboro Police Chief Gene Wrinn said Frechette helped out Friday, but he cautioned that citizens attempting to become involved in incidents where officers are already on scene can complicate the police response and get people injured unnecessarily.
