Vermont spotlighted for rapid road repairs

Posted: Updated:

Wild weather across the country was the focus of conversation at a meeting of national transportation leaders in Burlington Monday.

Vermont Transportation Secretary Brian Searles talked about Vermont's experiences with Tropical Storm Irene and other weather-related incidents that have hammered the state in the past few years.

The goal of the conference is to help states prioritize spending and create a plan to move forward, both in cases of weather emergencies like Tropical Storm Irene and in long-term planning. And many say Vermont's responses are helping lead the way.

"We're excited to learn from Vermont and see how fast-- I mean, they repaired and replaced a road in 18 days. That's just unheard of around the country. So, everyone here is anxiously waiting to see how Vermont did that. And likewise, I'm sure Vermont is going to be picking up pieces from around the country," said Carlos Braceras, the executive director of the Utah Department of Transportation.

Attendees say meetings like these help write the manual for road maintenance around the country. The conference continues this week.
