The Vermont Mountaineers and North Adams SteepleCats split a New England Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader at Recreation Field on Monday in Montpelier. Each game was seven innings in length.
Vermont got the best of the SteepleCats in game one by coming away with a 5-0 win. It was a pitcher's duel through the first four and a half innings as the two teams were scoreless.
The Mountaineers offense heated up in the bottom of the 5th. Thomas Roulis (Dartmouth) got the inning started with a lead-off double. Two batters later, Scott Donley (Indiana) hit an RBI single to break the scoreless tie. The following batter, Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) hit an RBI double off the wall in left to make it 2-0.
In the 6th, Vermont picked up right where they left off. Mark Podlas (Dayton) led off with a single and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt MacDowell (Dartmouth). Bret Dennis (St. John's) walked to make it first and second with just one out. Two batters later, Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) blew the game open with a two out, two RBI single to make it 4-0. Two batter after that, Mike Vigliarolo hit an RBI single to make it 5-0 Vermont. That is how the game would end.
Trey Oest (Tampa) dazzled and improved to 3-0 on the summer. He pitched a seven-inning complete game and allowed no runs on seven hits and no walks. He struck out two.
Casey Kennedy (Glendale CC) took the loss and fell to 0-1. He went four and one-third innings and allowed two runs on six hits and two walks.
Game two was a different story for the Mountaineers as they fell 2-1.
North Adams scored the first two runs of the game, one in the 1st and one in the 3rd. Both runs were scored by Joe Landi (Rhode Island). Landi led off the 1st with a walk. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Tuck (California-San Diego). Vinny Zarrillo (Rutgers) followed with a single to make it second and third with one away. Brad Anderson (Pepperdine) hit a sacrifice fly to score Landi and make it 1-0.
Two innings later Landi led off the 3rd with a double and came around to score on a Zarrillo ground ball that ate up shortstop Thomas Roulis (Dartmouth). The ball took a tough hop off the infield cut-out and sped up on its way to Roulis who made contact with it before it went into the outfield. Roulis was charged with an error and Landi scored on the play to make it 2-0.
Vermont got its lone run of the game in the 6th. Mike Vigliarolo singled with one out and moved to second on a passed ball. He scored when Scott Donley reached on an error by second basemen Joe Landi.
Scott Squier (Hawaii) started for North Adams and was dominant. Squier pitched a complete seven-inning game and gave up one unearned run on six hits and no walks. He struck out five. With the win, Squier moved to 3-4 on the summer. All three of his wins have come against Vermont.
Cameron Sorgie (Albany) took the loss for the Mountaineers and fell to 1-3 on the year. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk in a complete game seven-inning performance. He struck out eight SteepleCats.
