Beaver dam causes costly road damage

Posted: Updated:
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -

Town officials in St. Johnsbury are blaming beavers for an expensive washout at the St. Johnsbury-Lyndon Industrial Park.

The beaver dam plugged a 4-foot culvert beneath the road to fill a nearby wetland with water, but when rains hit, that drove water 6-feet above the culvert and eroded the soil beneath the road. Repairs will cost at least $120,000.

The dam has been dismantled.
