Artifacts turning up at historic Adirondack site

Posted: Updated:

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) - An archaeological dig at an Adirondack lakeside women's retreat is uncovering artifacts from a fire that destroyed a hotel located at the site more than a century ago.

Megan Springate of the University of Maryland started excavations at the Wiawaka Holiday House on the eastern shore of Lake George in early June. She says her team of about 50 volunteers has found a significant number of artifacts that will help her explore the early years of the site and the experiences of the women who stayed there in the early 20th century.

The dig ends Friday.

Wiawaka was founded in 1903 to provide single women working at Albany-area textile mills a respite from their harsh working conditions. Two years later a fire destroyed some of the buildings on the site.
