Montpelier celebration cuts waste by two-thirds

Posted: Updated:

The numbers are in for Montpelier's Independence Day celebration. The event tried to go zero waste this year, setting up recycle stations and bins for compost.

Organizers say they collected 1,400 pounds of food waste. People recycled over half of the waste from the celebration, cutting the garbage usually generated by two-thirds.

The celebration is Montpelier's largest event, bringing 20,000 people into the downtown area.
