Widow files suit in Burlington triathlon death

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The widow of a Massachusetts man who drowned during a triathlon in Burlington last year has filed a $1 million lawsuit against the event's organizers.

The USA Triathlon national championships were held in Vermont the last two years, featuring top athletes from around the country. During the swim portion of the event, Richard Angelo, 53, of Beverly, Mass., had a medical issue and died.

The lawsuit claims the event should never have been allowed to take place in unusually choppy conditions on Lake Champlain. The suit also says there was not enough emergency staff or lifesaving equipment on hand.
