Vermonter wins James Beard leadership award

HARTLAND, Vt. -

The James Beard Awards are best known for highlighting outstanding chefs, but the foundation also draws attention to those trying to improve the food industry as a whole.

The 2013 James Beard Leadership Awards have just been announced and the co-director of Hartland's Sustainable Food Laboratory, Hal Hamilton, is among this year's winners.

The nonprofit works with small and large businesses across the world to make the food they produce more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Hamilton founded the company.

"I was a full-time dairy farmer myself for the first part of my adult life and now I live on a farm here in Hartland Four Corners. I certainly believe in sustaining family farms and the place they are," Hamilton said. "So, we actually do projects around the world with small farmers in developing countries, reducing greenhouse gas emissions for Costco's egg supply, for example, and improving the condition of beef productions across the U.S."

Hamilton is one five people to receive this year's leadership award. They will all be honored in October.
