Barre honors deputy sheriff killed in crash

BARRE, Vt. -

Barre is honoring a deputy sheriff who died in a crash last week.

Officers from Barre City and Orange County gathered to honor 22-year-old Deputy Sheriff Michael Zemanek at the Youth Triumphant Memorial in Barre.

Barre City Police have asked that all flags in the area be flown at half-staff Tuesday and Wednesday.

Zemanek was off duty when his car went out of control on Interstate 89, slamming into a guard rail. Officials believe it was a medical condition that led to the crash, but it is still unclear exactly what caused his death.

Zemanek worked with the Barre City police department for almost three years before taking a position with the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

"I believe he was going to make a very good police officer. He had a lot of enthusiasm, he cared about people, he cared about his community, and he just wanted to be a police officer," said Deputy Chief Andrew Marceau of the Barre City Police Department.

The funeral for Zemanek will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Saint Monica Catholic Church in Barre.

A memorial service will also be held at Norwich University in Northfield at 2 p.m.
