PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

About two dozen protesters picketed outside a Plattsburgh pet store Tuesday after the owner's husband told police he dumped sick puppies in the woods around Clinton County.

The protesters want to see Northern Puppies pet store along Route 3 shutdown.

On Monday, Michael Staley told WCAX News he staged a burglary to get rid of 24 puppies without his wife's knowledge. He says they could no longer afford the high vet bills.

Staley says previous animal cruelty charges against his wife, Tammy, prevented them from selling the dogs, but protesters say that's no excuse.

"This really broke my heart. I don't know why they couldn't have just surrendered them to the ASPCA or the veterinarian or somewhere else. They didn't have to do what they did. I think they need to be dropped off in the woods tell you the truth," said Lorie Kimball, a protester.

Volunteers at the protest say they found four more puppies bringing the total number recovered to 17.
