The North scored 5 times in the top of the tenth inning to beat the South 10-5 in game one of the annual Vermont High School North-South Baseball All Star Game Saturday in Rutland. CVU's Davis Mikell had a homerun and 4 RBI. The North won despite the South rallying twice in their final at bats to keep the game.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, South got two runs to tie it. Burr and Burton's Jake Stalcup had the game tying RBI double. West Rutland's Tyler Bathalon tried to score the game winning run on that hit, but he was thrown out at the plate.
In the ninth inning, Mikell hit a solo homerun over the right field fence, which was followed by a 2-run inside the park homerun to center by BFA Farifax's Chris Wehner. That made it 5-2 going to the bottom of the ninth.
But the South rallied again, scoring three runs. Bathalon, who was thrown out at the plate in the seventh, drove in one of those three runs.
In the top of the tenth inning, tied at 5, North opened the game up for good. Rice's Charlie Boardman hit an RBI ground rule double to left center. The South went in order in the bottom of the tenth.
The North scored the first two runs of the game on a balk with a man at third and a Mikell RBI single.
