The majority of the players on the Hyde Park Rookie team have been playing for the past four years together with the same coach. It appears they have picked up a lot in that time. This year, more kids said no thanks to hitting off the tee than in years past.
Thea, an 8 year old First Baseman asks, "How many balls do you go through in a game?"
Phil Schelzo, Lake Monsters Clubhouse Manager: "We start out with 48. We could possibly end up using 60. If it rains, we could use up to 72 or 84 or a game, because the umpire will continually throw them out. Once they hit the outfield grass, they're wet. They won't give that to the pitcher."
Hayden, an 8 year old Catcher asks, "I was 4 years old when I started playing baseball. How old were you when you started playing baseball?"
Ryan Huck, Lake Monsters First Baseman: "That's a great question Hayden. I was actually the same age as you when I started playing baseball. I was around 4 years old, so I've been playing for about 18 years and it still hasn't gotten old. I love every minute of it."
Anna, an 8 year old Catcher asks, "Has the ball ever completely gone past the catcher before?"
Ryan Gorton, Lake Monsters Catcher: "Hey Anna. Yes, absolutely it's happened before. When you catch as much as I have, it's going to happen. With guys throwing hard, it has a lot of movement on it and sometimes you just can't catch it. You try to catch every one, but sometimes you just can't so you just hustle back to the backstop, pick it up and worry about the next one, try to keep it in front."
