Montpelier wants engines banned on Berlin Pond

Posted: Updated:

The city of Montpelier is asking the state for further protection of its water source at Berlin Pond.

In an appeal to the DEC, the city is asking for a rule change to bar the use of internal combustion engines on the pond.

The Vermont Supreme Court last year overturned a case preventing the city from restricting public access to the pond. In its appeal, the city says it can live with non-motorized boats, swimmers and fishermen, but that it is concerned about contamination of the water source from petroleum products from ice augers or other vehicles.
