Essex, Rice ready for football

Posted: Updated:

Hard to believe but the high school football season is just two weeks away. Teams hitting the practice fields in preparation for what should be a whole lot gridiron fun in 2013.

In Division 1, the Essex Hornets are hoping they'll be a team worth buzzing about when it's all said and done.

Charlie Burnett's squad is coming off an impressive 7-3 season in which they advanced all the way to the state semifinals before falling to BFA-St. Albans

If Essex is going to get back there this year, they're going to have to do it without some key pieces, most noteable star quarterback Joey Picard. Who combined for more than 30 touchdowns last season.

Sure, that will certainly be a challenge. But with new faces ready to burst into the spotlight like all league receiver Cody Greene, this team is confident it'll find new ways to beat their opponents come week 1.

While most teams are aiming to get to the top, the Rice Green Knights are looking to stay up there this season.

After an undefeated 2012 campaign, Neil Brodeur's team won't settle for anything less than another year of perfection.

Aiding in that mission will be the return of key all-conference players in tight end Matt Maynard, lineman John Boardman & standout receivers Tommy Fitzgerald & Michael Morrissey .

The talented group helped make the green and white not only one of the most balanced offenses in the state but also turned the defense into one to be feared.

Rice allowed just 6 points per game last season and shutout five teams on their way to 11-0.

The numbers don't lie, a team as balanced as they come. With the veteran leadership to make them top contenders again this fall.
