Former Vermont Senator and Burlington Democratic party leader Thomas Crowley has died.

Crowley was a graduate of St. Michaels College, and a longtime resident of Chittenden County.  He served in the Vermont Senate from 1967 to 1991.  He went on to be appointed by Governor Dean as an Assistant Judge.

Crowley was recognized over the years for his personal and public battles against alcoholism.  While in Montpelier Crowley was known as "Mr. Transportation,"  because of the committee he chaired.   Senator Dick Mazza (D-Grand Isle County) followed Crowley in that post and remembers him fondly.  "One of the things that always stuck out about Tom Crowley was that I learned he was very strong on constituent's service.  When someone called him, he always got back to them, he always followed through. He really cared about the people," Mazza said.

Crowley died Saturday at the age of 77.  His funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Pine St. in Burlington.
