Montpelier bike path plans take shape

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Momentum is building to connect the bike path in Montpelier.

For years the nearly two mile bike path has come to an abrupt end near the Taylor Street Bridge, only to pick up again on the other side of Main Street.   But officials say plans are in the works to finally connect the two parts, as well as an eventual link to Barre and beyond.

"We're in the final stages of purchasing a key property that will allow us to complete that line so the bike path will run through the downtown area. In addition we've just finalized plans to extend the bike path going east from where it ends right now at the co-op," said Montpelier Mayor John Hollar.

To join the two segments of the path, Montpelier is acquiring property on both sides of the North Branch River.  It will also have to build a bridge next to the current railroad trestle.
