Burlington police are warning residents of a potential phone scam.
They say several people called the department to complain that a fundraising company had been calling residents claiming to be collecting cash on behalf of the police department.
One person told investigators her caller I.D. identified "Burlington Police" as the caller. Police say they do not conduct telephone fundraisers. But the Burlington Police Officers Association is raising money. However the employee's union say it does not identify itself as the police department when it calls.
"It's very alarming to our department that somebody would attempt to do this and at this point we're just in the investigation phase, but if we receive more complaints there are possible fraud charges that may result," said Sgt. Thomas Radford, of the Burlington Police Department.
Anyone with questions is urged to call Burlington Police or the Police Officers Association.
