Higher sales taxes in New York could mean millions for Essex County.
Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law Tuesday increasing the sales tax to 4 percent. This would bring the tax amount to 8 percent, like neighboring counties. Essex could rake in $2 million from these sales taxes. That is if the Board of Supervisors approves it at its next meeting in September. The county manager said the increase could help, but won't fix the $8 million budget gap.
