Vt. renegotiates health care contracts, saving millions

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The state of Vermont has renegotiated its employee health care contracts, saving $10 million a year.

The Shumlin administration says half the savings come through a new deal with Blue Cross Blue Shield to administer health insurance for 23,000 employees, retirees and family members. Blue Cross will maintain the same benefits and also offer a new wellness program to help employees eliminate risk factors like smoking and obesity.

The rest of the savings comes through renegotiated contracts for prescription drugs and dental care.
