Ron McConnell, a 51-year-old from Vergennes, captured a pair of titles at the USA National Throwing Championships in Illinois in early August. One of his victories, the Throws Pentathlon, included throws in five different disciplines, shot put, hammer throw, discus, 35 pound weight and javelin.
McConnell, who competed in the 1996 Olympic Trials in the javelin, had to struggle back from a significant back injury he suffered last year to be ready to compete in the Championships. Instead of surgery, McConnell developed his own rehab procedure and was able to rebuild his strength to the point where he could compete and win at the highest level.
