FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (AP) - A 14-year-old boy faces charges of manslaughter and assault in the fatal shooting of his 13-year-old friend in Washington County.
The Glens Falls Post-Star reports that the teen is accused in the death of Gary Cota, who was shot in the head in his Fort Edward bedroom in June 2012. The 14-year-old's name is being withheld because of his age and police say he'll be prosecuted in family court.
Fort Edward Police Chief Justin Derway tells the newspaper there are no allegations that the boy intentionally shot Cota. But he says evidence showed the 14-year-old was handling the 12-gauge shotgun when it went off.
The shotgun belonged to Cota. In a civil proceeding, his parents, Louis and Nichole Cota, pleaded guilty to child neglect for not securing the gun.
