Vt. trails damaged by Irene still undergoing repairs

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The wet end to spring and start of the summer didn't damage Vermont's iconic Long Trail.

The Green Mountain Club says hiking on the Long Trail this summer was not affected by the storms earlier this season. They say because the trail runs mostly along ridgelines, it's where the water's source is, not its destination and therefore rain causes less trail damage. Side trails and the Appalachian Trail in the Upper Valley usually see more damage.

But nearly two years later, the club is still working to repair damage from Tropical Storm Irene.

"We are working to repair the trail in Shrewsbury, which is the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail, where it was washed away. That was the most heavily damaged part of the trail perhaps," said Will Wiquist, executive director of the Green Mountain Club.

Wiquist says crews are out working and they hope to have that part of the trail opened in the fall.
