EEE detected in Sudbury

Posted: Updated:
SUDBURY, Vt. -

More Eastern equine encephalitis has been found in mosquitoes in Vermont.

The Vermont Department of Health says the virus was detected for the first time this season in mosquitoes in Sudbury. It was also found in two more pools of mosquitoes collected in Whiting-- the same area where bugs already tested positive.

Thursday night, the state sprayed a 2-mile radius over Whiting. Another treatment is scheduled for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, West Nile virus has also been detected in Vermont. So far this year it has turned up in mosquitoes in Leicester, Whiting, Pittsford, Brandon, Shoreham and Fairfax.

Both EEE and West Nile are spread to humans and some animals through the bite of infected mosquitoes.
