Ellie Mills scored just over three minutes into the second half to help lead Vermont to a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart in the women's soccer season opener of the TD Bank Classic at Virtue Field. Vermont moves to 1-0 on the year, while Sacred Heart falls to 0-1.
Sacred Heart jumped out to an early lead in the game after Marissa Christy received a cross in the center of the box from Monica Re, and headed it in to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0, just over eight minutes into the first half.
The Catamounts answered back in the 22nd minute when CC Greer sent a short pass to Alexandra Dezenzo just outside the 18-yard box, and Dezenzo fired a shot over the keeper's head to tie the score, 1-1.
The rest of the first half remained scoreless, as the teams entered halftime tied at 1.
Just over three minutes into the second half, Nikki McFarland sent a long cross to the top of the six-yard box, and Ellie Mills fired a one-timed volley past the keeper to give Vermont a 2-1 lead.
Vermont's defense tightened up for the remaining 42 minutes, allowing just one shot in the half, and went on to secure the 2-1 victory.
The Catamounts held a 9-5 advantage in shots, while corners were even, 4-4.
Sophomore Ally Ramos earned the win in net for Vermont after making two saves in the contest. Sacred Heart goalkeeper, Sydney Judkins, made four saves in the losing effort for the Pioneers.
The Catamounts play their final game of the TD Bank tournament on Sunday (Aug. 25) when they take on Colgate at 1:30 p.m.
