A 76-year-old from Glover, charged with first degree murder, has died.
Carlton Bickford was arraigned in July on the first degree murder charge. Police say he admitted to shooting and killing 72-year-old Rachel Coburn of nearby Barton.
Bickford told police he got into an argument with Coburn at her West Street home and returned with a shotgun. Police say after the shooting, Bickford then attempted to take his own life with the gun, but grazed his shoulder suffering only minor injuries. Saturday, Vermont State Police confirmed that Bickford died overnight of apparent natural causes while at Fletcher Allen Medical Center.
His body will be transported to the Vermont Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's for an autopsy, scheduled for Monday, to determine the official cause and manner of death.
