Forest Service fines logger for illegal cutting

Posted: Updated:

WARREN, Vt. (AP) - Federal authorities say a Waitsfield logger will pay more than $2,800 in fines and restitution for illegal cutting in Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest in 2011.

Authorities say Michael Marino was working on private land next to Green Mountain National Forest land in Warren when he lost track of where the property line was.

Officials say Marino cut four trees on government land and removed 3 of them. They say he cooperated with the investigation and agreed to pay a $1,500 fine, plus more than $1,300 in restitution.

Acting Forest Supervisor Mary Doke says it's the responsibility of anyone working near national forest lands to know where the boundaries are.
