Standoff near Burlington elementary school

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A big show of force near a Burlington elementary school Tuesday afternoon.

Just before 3 p.m., H.O. Wheeler went into a modified lockdown. School employees say they spotted a man carrying what appeared to be a long rifle aiming it at passing cars. That man was identified as Toryn Hill, 23. Police say he and another man, Tanouce Crusade, 24, were throwing items off a Spring Street porch and screaming obscenities. After 45 minutes of negotiations police convinced the men to leave the porch. Turns out that weapon was a BB gun.

"We take these calls seriously. So, in the end we don't want people walking around with BB guns because this is the type of response that we have to use for situations like this to try to ensure the public safety," Burlington Police Lt. Matthew Sullivan said.

Hill and Crusade were cited for disorderly conduct. They're slated to appear in court Thursday.
