From a new teacher to new classmates, the first day of school can bring a mix of emotions.
"I was feeling nervous and overjoyed," Mario Robinson said.
For Mario, third-grade at Hinesburg Community School is off to a pretty good start.
"I've met my teacher before, but I haven't spent a whole day with her. And I was overjoyed because I love school," Mario explained.
And that seems to be the case for many kids here.
"It's been pretty good," said Mia Twaorg, a fourth-grader.
For Grace Buzzell, going into sixth-grade will be a bit of a transition.
Reporter Gina Bullard: Were you nervous going into middle school?
Grace Buzzell: Kind of, because it's like bigger kids and more stuff. But now that I'm here, it's easier. It's a step up.
For many kids, going back to school means seeing their friends again. But for second-grader Desiree Roth-Longe, joining a new class means meeting new friends.
"I was thinking, yeah, I should go. No, I shouldn't. Yeah, I should go. No, I shouldn't," Desiree said.
Gina Bullard: Now you're halfway through the day, how are you feeling?
Desiree Roth-Longe: Good because I made tons of friends that are new.
One thing that is definitely new on the first day is outfits.
"I picked out this outfit," Mario noted.
From sneakers to shirts, kids are putting on a show. For Mario, that show started at home.
"I tried on two pairs of pants, but my dad said they didn't look good. So, I went out with these and he said that was fine," Mario said.
But does the first day of school outfit really matter that much?
"My mom sorta thinks it is," Mario said.
Well, moms usually know best. We'll go with yes.
Lots of firsts to kick off the school year.
