Middlebury College will not divest its endowment of fossil fuel companies.
Students, faculty, staff and alumni have called on Middlebury to divest-- part of a national movement to reduce future greenhouse gas emissions. But Middlebury President Ron Liebowitz says the board of trustees has decided there are too many questions that raise serious concerns or remain unanswered. Liebowitz says those questions include the effects of divestment. Would it reduce consumption of fossil fuels? What impact would it have on future returns of the endowment, and what additional costs might it impose?
