The governor's nine-day trip to China will be paid for by a business that could benefit from the trip.
The owner of Jay Peak is funding the trip. Vt. Gov. Peter Shumlin and members of his administration want to line up more foreign investors under the EB-5 program. They'd help fund the $500 million Northeast Kingdom Development Initiative that includes expansion of the ski resort.
Jay Peak owner Bill Stenger and project manager Alex MacLean-- who happens to be Shumlin's former chief of staff-- will also travel with the governor.
Taxpayers paid for a similar trip taken by Gov. Jim Douglas in 2010.
WCAX News asked if Gov. Shumlin would have time to talk with us Thursday afternoon about the trip financing, but had not yet heard back when this story was published.
