Vt. man, 74, ticketed for pot plant

Posted: Updated:
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -

A 74-year-old Vermont man was busted for growing a single pot plant.

St. Johnsbury police issued William Reynolds the town's first civil marijuana ticket since decriminalization took effect last month.

Reynolds told police he had the seed for years and finally decided to plant it.

Wednesday, police seized the potted, 2-and-a-half-foot marijuana plant from the porch of the man's Main Street apartment.

Police say Reynolds was cooperative and gave them no indication he was a pot smoker or had other plants.

"He'd made the comment that he was experimenting and just wanted to see if he could do it. You know, he says, 'I'm 74 years old. I've never done this before and I wanted to see if I could grow one,'" St. Johnsbury Police Det. Daniele Kostruba said.

Reynolds was fined $200. He does not plan to fight the ticket.
