IRS issues tax rules for married same-sex couples

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The federal government is issuing the new regulations that will allow gay couples to file joint federal tax returns.

The new rules implement the tax aspects of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in June which invalidated a section of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.

Gay couples married in states that recognize same-sex marriages will be treated like heterosexual couples for federal tax purposes, no matter what state they live in.
