Man arrested in Burlington shootout

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Police have charged a South Burlington man with attempted murder after an early morning shoot-out in the Queen City.

Police got several 911 calls just before 4 a.m. of multiple gun shots near a home on Peru Street. Officers say Michael Brooks, 23, shot a 28 year-old Brooklyn, New York man. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  Brooks, a convicted felon with a history of drug and assault charges, was also treated and released for a gunshot wound.

Neighbors like Peggy Luhrs, say they heard about eight shots fired before police arrived. "I have heard firecrackers around here plenty of times and it didn't sound like that, so I don't know what it was but I could've sworn it came from that way, but it's hard to tell, but I definitely was awoken by that last night," she said.

Brooks is being held at the Chittenden County Correctional Center for lack of a $500,000 dollar bail.
