Victims of sex crimes now have a new resource in St. Johnsbury.
The Caledonia Special Investigations Unit handles sexual violence and severe child abuse cases. The unit is expanding. It now has private interview spaces and a playroom for kids in a building on Eastern Avenue. Victims will no longer have to come to the police department. Detectives hope the homier environment will make victims feel more comfortable reporting these sensitive crimes.
"It gives them less stress and more of a support system. It's definitely a good thing and it is needed. It's needed all over," said St. Johnsbury Police Det. Daniele Kostruba.
Detectives say the number of sex crimes statewide is rising. CSIU focuses on victims in Caledonia County, but their new facility mimics what's already being done in Chittenden and Franklin Counties.
