NH Legislature listens to GMO labeling supporter

Posted: Updated:
LYME, N.H. -

A representative from Consumer Reports is making the case for GMO labeling in New Hampshire Tuesday.

Michael Hanson will speak. Hanson is a senior scientist from the Consumers Union.

He will be discussing legislation requiring clear labeling of genetically modified foods with members of the House Environment and Agriculture Committee. GMO foods are grown from seeds that have been specially engineered to resist pesticides. Opponents of the labeling laws say GMO food is safe. However, supporters say a lack of these labels could lead to health risks.

Similar legislation is being debated in Maine, Vermont and Connecticut.
