Northern New York rabies bait dropped

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

Rabies vaccine baits are being dropped across northern New York. The project spans to Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

It is an effort to control raccoons, skunks and other wildlife infected with rabies. The packets are olive-green colored and about the size of a quarter. They are marshmallow flavored and meant to attract these animals.

The Press Republican reports it is a field trial that has been effective with rabid raccoons, coyotes and foxes, but so far not skunks. The USDA says these packets are safe for pets, but humans should wash their hands if they come into contact with the packets.
